Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah (Sajaya), a subsidiary of the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation for Creating Leaders and Innovators (Rubu’ Qarn), performed its first ever operetta on Thursday. Titled ‘Dreams of Colours,’ the musical took place at the Sharjah Cultural Palace theatre.

 

Telling the story of a group of colours that unite to fulfil their dreams, the performance from Sajaya was organised in collaboration with Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, Sharjah Children’s Centres and the Art for All Centre. The event was planned as part of Sharjah’s goal to support theatre movement in the UAE and to participate in realising UAE Vision 2021’s aspiration of creating a knowledge-based community that enjoys a strong position in the regional arts scene.

 

Dreams of Colours featured skillfully choreographed singing and acting from Sajaya’s team of performers who perfectly represented the tale of six colours, each with a unique dream of how they could make the world a better place. The combination of artistic scenes was designed to showcase a stimulating template for performance arts and theatre in Sharjah.

 

“Dreams of Colours reveals the beauty of the performing arts, with the operetta underlining Sajaya’s vision to strengthen the presence of its young members in the theatre industry. Musicals such as this help young ladies to gain new artistic experiences and to see new worlds. Taking to the stage in such a creative manner enhances their self-confidence, broadens their social skills and develops their independence,” said Sheikha Aisha Khalid Al Qasimi, Director of Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah.

 

“Sajaya’s philosophy of work perfectly aligns with the vision of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Ruler of Sharjah and his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Rubu’ Qarn Foundation, who encourage the engagement of young people in theatre and the performing arts. They are keen to immerse younger generations in creative endeavours in order to enrich their experiences and encourage their innovation,” she added.

 

Sajaya provided a sign language interpreter for the performance of Dreams of Colours, who translated the operetta for the children with hearing disabilities and adults who were present to ensure that everyone could enjoy the delivery of the message. The theatrical work succeeded in highlighting the ability of art and theatre to transcend obstacles and challenges to become an aesthetic humanitarian language.

 

Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah is a leading organisation dedicated to developing the talents of young girls in the age group of 13-18 years in all creative spheres. It was established in 2004 under the umbrella of Sharjah Children’s Centres before becoming an independent entity in 2012 following an administrative decree from Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Rubu’ Qarn Foundation.
