‘1001 Titles,’ an initiative from Knowledge without Borders, has announced the release of its debut collection of publications. The inaugural series of books from the project, which was launched in conjunction with 2016 being declared as the Year of Reading, is the first step in its plan of releasing 1001 new Emirati books during this year and the next.

 

The first reading compilation from 1001 Titles comprises 11 books written by Emirati and Arab authors residing in the UAE. The new titles have been released by local publishing houses that submitted applications to produce books within the scheme, with the publishers selected by the 1001 Titles Advisory Committee.

 

"We are extremely happy to offer the first collection of 1001 Titles’ publications, a move that forms the start of our path towards releasing 1,001 titles this year and the next. This inaugural range of books comprises 11 titles covering a variety of genres for adults and young adults; including knowledge, culture, administration and literature. We hope this new collection will go some way to enhancing the intellectual output of the UAE," said Majd Al Shehhi, Manager of 1001 Titles. 

 

1001 Titles’ premiere collection includes three books written by Dr. Ali Abdul Qader, the first of which is titled ‘The UAE Reads,’ which contains literary essays about the noble art of reading and its benefits. His second title in the collection is ‘The World Speaks Languages,’ which addresses the relationship of language to the history and identity of peoples, while his third title ‘Football, Society and History’ discusses the world's most popular sport.

 

Among the other books in the first 1001 Titles collection is ‘Predicting the Future – an Encyclopedia.’ Authored by Suleiman Mohammed Al Kaabi, the work is an extensive guide to the administrative terminology associated with the science of foreseeing the future. 

 

‘Tourism,’ written by Ibrahim Salem Al Awadhi, addresses the topic of travel and leisure while ‘Moral Values in Very Short Stories’ by Alaa Ibrahim Daoud comprises a selection of short stories that invite readers to think about ethical considerations in life. ‘The Oratory Club,’ authored by Bassam Dahhi, targets young adolescents and aims to develop their personal skills in the field of effective communication, with its guidance based on the experiences of the global ‘Toastmaster’ public speaking organisation.

 

Young adults can benefit from four books in the collection authored by Basema Al Mesbahi; ‘The Thought Club,’ which aims to develop personal skills in higher thinking; ‘The Self- Development Club,’ which encompasses personal development; ‘The Reading Club,’ which aims to assist knowledge acquisition by establishing a reading association and ‘The Business and Finance Club,’ which has been written to help the reader master economic matters.

 

Al Shehhi noted that 1001 Titles is still receiving applications from publishing houses in the UAE that meet the submission criteria, which includes that the book should be written in classic Arabic, be a first edition and adhere to Islamic, Arab and Gulf values. Launched in February 2016, 1001 Titles aims to enrich the UAE’s intellectual output and ensure the sustainability of its publishing sector, as well as publishing sectors in other countries. It also aims to support Emirati authors and Emirati publishing houses by working to ensure that they can successfully compete in the industry in the face of its many challenges.
